September 27, 2001 - Fred West - A British documentary filmmaker has called for an investigation into claims that serial killer Fred West may have murdered 20 more people. David Monaghan said West confessed the additional murders to a social worker assigned to him in prison and repeated them in a yet unaired TV show. Gloucestershire police said there was not enough evidence to investigate the claims and are trying to block the airing of the interview.

September 27, 2001 - Friedrich Leibacher - A gunman in the Swiss town of Zug killed 14 lawmakers and elected officials and then shot himself during a local parliamentary session. The gunman, Friedrich Leibacher, was dressed in a homemade blue uniform simmilar to a police uniform when he entered the joint meeting of the government and parliament of the state of Zug and opened fire before setting off an explosion. Then he turned the gun on himself. Three members of the seven-person Zug government were killed, along with 11 of the 80 lawmakers. Fourteen more people were hospitalized. Leibacher, 57, who had a long-running feud with local authorities, left a note in his car announcing a "day of rage against the Zug mafia."

Investigator Kurt Bloechlinger told reporters that Leibacher had fired "several dozen" rounds from an assault rifle. He also fired a pump-action shotgun and was carrying a handgun. The assault rifle, a Sturmgewehr 90, was a civilian model similar to the standard weapon issued to Switzerland's militia army. Leibacher also threw a canister of flammable liquid that exploded. The incident was recorded by a video camera filming the parliamentary session.

Roland Schwyter, the magistrate leading the case, said Leibacher had been convicted in 1970 of a string of offenses including sexual abuse against children and financial crimes and was sent to a work training institution. In 1998 he argued with a bus driver and threatened the man with a handgun. That incident set off a series of legal cases, all of which Leibacher lost.

September 21, 2001 - Ian Brady - Moors murderer, Ian Brady, has been given permission to publish his book on serial killers by the hospital for the criminally insane where his is serving his sentence. On September 11, the hospital was granted a court order to obtain a copy of the manuscript and block its publication. After determining that the book, "The Gates of Janus," contained no references to the hospital or Brady's own crimes, a lawyer representing the hospital announced that they were not opposed to the publication of the book.

September 21, 2001 - Possible Serial Killer in Vancouver - According to the Vancouver Sun, police reviewing the cases of 31 women missing from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside have come up with over a dozen more cases that have yet to be formally added to the investigation. If the cases are officially added to the list, the number of missing women in Vancouver involved in drugs and the sex trade would increase to at least 43. Apparently a number of the new cases were reported to B.C. police agencies years ago, while other women were reported missing in recent months. One case dates back to 1985, three are from the 1990s, and the rest from 2000 and 2001. About two-thirds are files that originated with police agencies outside Vancouver, while the rest are cases from the city.

September 11, 2001 - Andrea Yates - The competency hearing for Andrea Yates, the Houston mother accused of drowning her five children, was postponed in the wake of the terrorism assault on the United States. Jurors were assembling at the Harris County Courthouse when the selection process were told to return September 18.

September 11, 2001 - Roger Andermatt - A 32-year-old Swiss nurse, claiming he acted out of compassion, confessed to killing 27 elderly and ailing patients over a six-year period. The nurse, identified as Roger Andermatt, was arrested at the end of June after a suspicious death in a nursing home. He subsequently admitted killing nine patients there. Suspecting the toll might be higher, police launched a full investigation into mysterious deaths in other homes where Andermatt worked. Under interrogation, Andermatt confessed to 18 other killings, including 12 in a home for invalids in the central Swiss town of Sarnen.

September 10, 2001 - Four Dead in San Francisco - Police are investigating the shooting deaths of two adults and two girls in a San Francisco home as a murder, though they have not ruled out murder-suicide. Police recovered a gun at the house where they found the four bodies. Investigators said they had no leads and were not releasing the victims' names. Property records showed Anthony and Anna Shami owned the home where the bodies were found. Neighbors said they had two daughters, ages 15 and 10. The San Francisco Chronicle had reported that there were no signs of forced entry into the house. Anthony Shami reportedly was a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle group.

September 10, 2001 - Adam Moss - Sioux City killer Adam Moss was charged with seven counts of first-degree murder. Moss, 24, was charged with killing his grilfriend, Leticia Aguilar, her five children, and Ronald Fish, a man who lived across town from the other victims. Authorities said all seven were bludgeoned with a hammer and that Fish and Aguilar also had knife wounds. Authorities say Moss beat the children to death while they slept on August 30, then went to Aguilar's room, cut her throat and beat her in the face.

September 9, 2001 - Four Dead in San Francisco - A family of four -- mom, dad and two girls -- was found shot to death in their home in San Francisco. Police would not say if the killings were committed by an intruder or if it was a case of murder-suicide.

September 10, 2001 - Joseph Ferguson - Lovestruck killer Joseph Ferguson, wanted in the slayings of his ex-girlfriend and four other people, committed suicide in a stolen car during a furious gun battle with police following a 40-minute chase through suburban Sacramento. The former security guard left a video suicide note which he made previously at the home of his last victim. In the tape he said he had "put on a hell of a show," adding, unambiguously, "I giveth and I taketh away, that's how it goes in fucking life."

September 9, 2001 - Joseph Ferguson - Police launched a nationwide manhunt for former security guard Joseph Ferguson after he shot and killed three former co-workers and a park employee. Ferguson, 20, was allegedly despondent after breaking up with his girlfriend, 20-year-old Nina Susu, and being suspended from his job for vandalizing Susu's car. The suspect, who is believed to be heavily armed, possibly wearing a bulletproof vest and toting a bag full of explosives for pipe bombs, made a cell phone call to a manager at Burns Security and said he was going to Old Sacramento, a downtown entertainment district, were he was going to kill more people than fellow Sacramento rampager, Nikolay Soltys.

September 9, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - Thousands of mourners in Shumsk, Ukraine, attended the funeral of Lyubov and Sergei Soltys, the immigrant mother and son killed by Nikolay Soltys, her husband (and father), in Sacramento. The two white coffins first arrived from Sacramento to the airport Ukraine's capital Kiev. Relatives then took the bodies to the victims' hometown of Shumsk, 220 miles away, in western Ukraine, for a burial ceremony. The first reports of the killings rattled this little town of one- and two-story brick homes in the western Ternopil region, and the whole town was overwhelmed with mourning. Most of Shumsk's 5,000 residents came to express their condolences.

September 8, 2001 - Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez - The manhunt for the gunman accused of killing three members of his ex-girlfriend's family ended at a campsite in the Los Padres National Forest where the suspect killed himself as officers closed in.

September 7, 2001 - Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez - In what is seeming like a daily dose of mass killing, a man in Simi Valley, California, allegedly shot and killed three relatives of an ex-girlfriend because he wrongly believed the woman had given him a viral disease. Reynaldo Herrera Rodriguez, 35, allegedly entered his ex-girlfriend's home through a garage door and shot five family members, killing three. The ex, Maria Rios, 24, was not home at the time.

September 6, 2001 - Terry Nichols - Oklahoma City's new district attorney said he will press ahead with state murder charges against Timothy McVeigh's co-conspirator, Terry Nichols. District Attorney Wes Lane said he would pursue 160 first-degree murder charges and other counts against Nichols and will seek the death penalty.

September 6, 2001 - Richard Baumhammers - A Pittsburg judge formally sentenced Richard Baumhammers to death for fatally shooting five people. Judge Jeffrey Manning blamed the racially-motivated rampage in part on Internet hate sites and lax enforcement of firearms laws. "They and their families will forever suffer needlessly and senselessly because you decided that their only misdeed was that they were different from you," Manning said.

September 6, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully charged Nikolay Soltys with the murder of his unborn child, bringing the total muder charges against him to seven. "Baby Soltys is a seventh victim and it's appropriate that all victims be charged, and that's what we have done," Scully said in a news conference. Investigators have been unable to establish a clear motive for the killing spree, other than he thought his wife and relatives were trying to poison him.

September 1, 2001 - Eddie Lee Mosley - Fort Lauderdale police announced DNA evidence has linked a suspected serial killer Eddie Lee Mosley to the death of an eighth woman slain in 1984. Mosley, who has been involuntarily committed to psychiatric institutions since 1988, was genetically linked to the rape and murder of 29-year-old Loretta Young Brown. Previous DNA tests have linked Mosley to the seven other deaths -- five women, a teen-ager and a girl. Mosley has not been charged with any of the killings because he has been found incompetent to stand trial in two of the murders. Prosecutors began testing Mosley's DNA against several South Florida murders after tests linked him to the 1985 slaying of 8-year-old Shandra Whitehead. He is suspected of slaying up to 16 women and young girls in the Fort Lauderdale area between 1973 and 1987.

August 31, 2001 - Adam Moss - Just as mass murderer Nikolay Soltys was captured in Sacramento, another man, 23-year-old Adam Matthew Moss, was arrested in Sioux City, Iowa, for the murders of two adults and five children. The suspect, 23-year-old Adam Matthew Moss, is believed to have been the boyfriend of Leiticia Aguilar, the 31-year-old female victim and mother of the five murdered children. The other adult victim, 58-year-old Ronald Earl Fish, was found dead in the entryway of his home on the north side of town.

August 30, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - After a 10-day nationwide manhunt, Ukranian immigrant family annihilator Nikolay Soltys was captured at his mother's backyard in Sacramento where he was hiding under a desk. Soltys was arrested after his panicked family fled the home in a car and his brother called 911 from a framing shop several blocks away. According to Jennifer Murphy, an employess of the frame shop, Stepan Soltys was so nervous he, "kept pushing buttons 1-1-9, so I knew he wanted to dial 911. I brought him into the store and dialed 911 for him."

August 28, 2001 - 25 Dead in Ivory Coast - A stew laced with poison killed at least 25 people and hospitalized 80 others in the village of Labokro, in the Ivory Coast. The corn stew was sold by a woman to about 110 people who then were all felled by several abdominal pain, diarrhea and bouts of vomiting. The woman, her husband, her two children and her mother were among the dead. It is unclear who was responsible for the poisoning.

August 27, 2001 - William Lembcke - 16-year-old William Lembcke was sentenced to life in prison for the December 23 murder of his parents, Robert and Diana Lembcke, and his two siblings, Jolene, 18, and Wesley, 11. Lempcke killed his family after his parents confronted him for videotaping his teenage sister in the shower. The troubled youngster also admitted sexually molesting his sister's body after murdering her. Lembcke showed little emotion during most of the trial but sobbed openly during the sentencing phase. Deputy Stevens County Prosecutor David Bruneau applauded the verdict and sentence. The defense had sought conviction on the lesser charge of second- degree murder, arguing that Lembcke suffered diminished mental capacity at the time of the murders.

August 27, 2001 - Six dead in Brazil - According to the prime suspect in the murder of six Portuguese men found buried at a beach bar in the northeast of Brazil the crime began as a joke between him and his drinking buddies. Luis Melitao Guerreiro, 31, confessed to robbing the tourists and ordering five accomplices to kill and bury them at his seafront bar. Autopsies revealed sand in the victim's lungs, indicating the men were still alive when they were stacked on top of each other and dumped in a sand and concrete pit in the early hours of August 13. Jose Sales Sobrinho, chief coroner at the Fortaleza morgue said two of the men had been shot, all of them had been beaten, and one was strangled. "They had been brutally treated. We found punctured organs, broken ribs," Sales said.

"It all started out in jest," Guerreiro told reporters at police headquarters in the tourist city of Fortaleza. "I am guilty. I am a monster," he said, weeping. Guerreiro said a month before the murders he planned with his friends to kidnap a friend of his and another man who were coming from Portugal to visit and extort $393,000 from their families. Two days before they arrival they decided to kill the tourist after finding out six men would be arriving from Portugal. The tourists, all businessmen in their 40s and 50s, were not seen since August 12 when Guerreiro met them at Fortaleza airport. Guerreiro said he took the men to his bar where they drank whiskey for several hours. His helpers then tied up the men and Guerreiro went to withdraw cash on their bank cards before ordering the killings.

August 26, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - With a police helicopter circling overhead, more than 5,000 members of Sacramento's Eastern European community pack a church for the funerals of the six slain family members.

August 26, 2001 - Kevin Taylor - Police in Chicago's South Side said they arrested a man and charged with raping and strangling four drug-addicted prostitutes over a two-month period. The suspect, 27-year-old Kevin Taylor, left a fifth woman for dead over after arguing with her over the price for sex. "He would meet with the victims, make an arrangement for an act of prostitution, take them to a secluded area, and in these particular cases, he got into arguments with the victims and he strangled them," Chief Detective Philip Cline said.

August 23, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - As the search for Nikolay Soltys has expanded nationwide, the family rampager was added to the FBI's Most Wanted list. Adding Soltys to the list means that there will be more publicity and manpower allocated to his capture, said Sacramento County Sheriff Lou Blanas. "Most wanted" posters of Soltys will be posted nationally and internationally, said Richard Baker, special agent in charge of the FBI's Sacramento office. Despite reports placing Soltys in the Southeast, police believe he is probably still in the Sacramento area. Also the reward fund for his arrest was raised to $70,000.

August 22, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - Police in Sacramento searching for Nikolay Soltys, the 27-year-old Ukrainian immigrant suspected of stabbing to death his wife, child and four other family members, believe he could still be in the same Sacramento neighborhood where the killings occurred. They also canvassing Ukranian neighborhoods in San Francisco and Seattle searching for the killer. Agents believe he could have gone as far as Charlotte, Noth Carolina, and Binghamton, New York, where he has relatives.

August 21, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - Police discovered Soltys' Nissan Altima, with two family photographs inside with notes written in Russian on the back. One note had directions to the body of Sergey, his 3-year-old son. The second listed the slayings, suggesting that the victims were killed "for speaking out." As indicated on the picture, Sergey's body was found face down in a bloody cardboard box with his throat slit. The box had a several new toys inside, suggesting that the father lured the boy into the box with the toys before killing him.

August 20, 2001 - Nikolay Soltys - For reasons unknown, Nikolay Soltys, a 27-year-old Ukrainian immigrant, stabbed to death his 22-year-old pregnant wife, Lyubov, at their home in North Highlands, a Sacramento suburb. Twenty minutes later he went to his uncle's home in nearby Rancho Cordova were he killed his aunt and uncle, Galina Kukharskaya, 74, and Petr Kukharskiy, 75, and two of their grandchildren, Tatyana Kukharskaya and Dimitriy Kukharskiy. The two cousins were 9 years old. About an hour later Soltys went to his mother's house in Citrus Heights, another Sacramento suburb, from where he left with Sergey, his 3-year-old son. According to the mother Soltysseemed fine, and showed no sign of anything wrong. Police believe he was probably agitated and bloody, and cleaned up at her house before leaving.

Language problems between family members and police have hampered the investigation. Also basic mistrust of authorities in the Ukranian community have proved to be problematic. "Everybody's Russian -- neighbors, relatives, everybody," Sacramento County sheriff's Sergeant James Lewis said, adding, "We want to get this guy off the streets as quickly as possible." The last reported sighting of Soltys puts him driving with his son in a green 1998 Ford Explorer.

August 20, 2001 - Three Murdered in Saskatchewan - A 17-year-old boy already accused of murdering a telephone repairman on a Saskatchewan reserve was charged with two more counts of first-degree murder. The 17-year-old was charged with the murders of Devin Keewatin, 20, and Anthony Akapew, 16, both of the Little Black Bear First Nation. "Autopsies showed they both died as a result of gunshot wounds," RCMP Cpl. Bill Betker said. The 17-year-old, whose name was not released because of his age, had already been charged with the second-degree murder of John Davies. The 45-year-old SaskTel repairman was shot to death while responding to a service call. Betker said police were still investigating the death of Bradley Bellegarde, 41, whose body was found a day later in a home on the Little Black Bear reserve.

August 17, 2001 - Angel Maturino Resendiz - Condemned rail-riding serial killer Angel Maturino Resendiz cut himself on the neck and arms with a disposable razor blade he pried open and was transferred to a prison medical facility. Maturino Resendiz, 41, was transferred from death row at the Polunsky Unit near Livingston to the Jester IV Unit near Rosharon, said Larry Fitzgerald, spokesman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. "He did some self-mutilation, cutting himself with a razor blade," Fitzgerald said. "This is not the first trip he's had down there. All were dealing with self-mutilation."

August 15, 2001 - Duan Guocheng - Police matched footprints from four slayings with a former juvenile delinquent's shoes and charged him with stabbing 13 young women to death in central China. Duan Guocheng, 28, is also suspected of committing up to 70 armed robberies. Duan was arrested at a hotel in Wuhan, a city in the Hubei province. According to the People's Daily, the suspect, while in custody, confessed to the killings. The four incidents occurred at night in dark streets or alleyways. The victims were all unaccompanied young women in their 20s. He was also charged with wounding three other women in knife attacks. Duan was wanted by provincial police for the 1999 slayings of nine young women and some 50 robberies in Hubei's Qiuyang region. When Duan was 13, he was sent to a juvenile corrections institute in the Qiuyang region for seven years. He also served a five-year sentence in the mid-1990s for robbery.

August 14, 2001 - Andrea Yates - TV personality Katie Couric has taken up the cause of confessed child killer Andrea Yates. After interviewing the murderer's brother, Andrew Kennedy, on NBC's "Today" show, Couric told viewers where to send contributions for her defense fund. "Any money left over will be given to women's charities dealing with postpartum depression and psychosis," added Couric.

August 10, 2001 - Andrea Yates - Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal announced they he will seek the death penalty for Yates. In another courtroom, Yates pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to two charges of capital murder in the deaths of three of her children -- Noah, 7, and John, 5,and her 6-month-old baby daughter, Mary. Prosecutors chose not to indict Yates in the deaths of her two other sons Luke, 2, and Paul, 3.

August 9, 2001 - Paul Runge - Accused serial killer Paul Runge pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting and killing four women and a 10-year-old girl in Cook County. Runge previously pleaded not guilty in DuPage County to murder charges in the deaths of two Hanover Park sisters. Prosecutors said that Runge, 31, confessed to the slayings.

August 1, 2001 - Theodore Kaczynski - Unabrother David Kaczynski has been chosen as the executive director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty, an anti-death penalty group. In 1996, Kaczynski and his wife, Linda Patrik, alerted authorities that his brother Theodore was the feared Unabomber after they read his 35,000-word anti-technology rant published in the Washington Post.

July 27, 2001 - Jummai Hassan - A 13-year-old girl arrested in northeast Nigeria for the murder of a youngster, confessed to the ritual- killings of 5o people. Jummai Hassan, a pupil at an army college, was arrested on July 17 in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State for the disappearance of a two-year-old boy, Ibro Joseph, said Borno State Police Commissioner Bello Uba Ringim. The police chief said that under interrogation the girl confessed to killing 50 more people. "During investigations, she confessed to being a member of a cult based in Lagos and that she has killed 51 people, including her father, since she was initiated seven years ago," Ringim said.

July 22, 2001 - Mohammed Adam Omar - Sana University's morgue killer, Mohammed Adam Omar, was executed in front of a crowd of 30,000 people. Originally he was going to be executed in front of the University where he killed two students, but the government moved the execution to a lot outside the city. The Sudanese morgue attendant -- nicknamed the "Sana Ripper" -- confessed to 16 murders but was convicted of only two.

July 20, 2001 - Michael Braae - "Cowboy Mike," a man wanted in connection with the disappearances of four women, the shooting of another and two rapes, was captured after a one-hour chase that ended when a police dog dragged the fugitive to the bank of the Snake River. Michael Braae, 41, had been the focus of a manhunt ranging across Idaho, Washington and Oregon that intensified over the last week when he was spotted at least three times ‹ at a garage sale in Randle, Washington; in Moscow, Idaho; and in LaGrande, Oregon.

July 17, 2001 - Ira Einhorn - French police took convicted murderer Ira Einhorn from his home in Champagne-Mouton to a car with American officials waiting to extradite him back to the United States. The 61-year-old former anti-war activist was convicted in absentia for the 1977 bludgeoning death of his girlfriend, Holly Maddux. Since he fled from the U.S. he lived in England, Ireland and Sweden under pseudonyms before being arrested in France in 1997. As part of the extradition agreement, Einhorn will face a new trial in Pennsylvania and -- if found guilty -- would not be eligible for the death penalty.

July 17, 2001 - Eight Burned to Death in Guatemala - An unruly mob burned to death eight highway robbers in a remote region of northern Guatemala. The violence occurred in the town of Secoyala, about 250 miles north of the capital, Guatemala City, police spokesman Faustino Sanchez said. The mob first captured a 17-year-old boy at the scene of one of the robberies and beat him until he provided names of his accomplices. Then the mob captured the eight suspects from nearby villages, tortured them and burned them alive. Nobody has been arrested for the killings. Police said they do not have any proof that the people killed actually were responsible for the highway robberies and do not have any details about the size of the mob.

July 17, 2001 - Mike Stagner - The man who allegedly shot and killed four people and wounded three others at an RV park in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, was charged with four counts of murder. District Attorney Mac Myers said he did not file ethnic intimidation charges, used to prosecute hate crimes, agaqinst Stagner because murder charges carry a stiffer penalty and better fit the case.

July 12, 2001 - Witch Killers in Congo - The number of witches hacked to death in the Ituri province People of northeastern Congo has been raised to more than 800 since mid-June. Residents of Aru, 50 miles south of Sudan, began killing people suspected of witchcraft in mid-June, but according to Ugandan forces, the carnage was stopped by July 8. "I have just contacted the officers there and the situation is calm. Nobody will give you the exact figure because nobody has gone to the villages to count the bodies, there are just estimates," Major General Odongo Jeje said.

July 12, 2001 - Ira Einhorn - In a desperate attempt to delay his extradition, American fugitive Ira Einhorn tried to slit his throat at his house in southwestern France. "I think he had really decided to end his life," said his lawyer, Dominique Delthil, "but at the last minute he changed his mind. It wasn't just an act... He tried to cut his throat with a knife... It was not very pretty." The 61-year-old former peace activist was found by French TV crew sitting in the kitchen with an open wound at the base of his neck and blood soaking his shirt. "I don't think they'll be able to arrest him if he's hospitalized," Delthil added. The suicide attempt came two hours after French authorities announced Einhorn lost his appeal to fight his extradition to the U.S.

July 6, 2001 - Byran Uyesugi - The widow of one of the seven men killed by copy machine repairman Byran Uyesugi during a rampage at the Xerox building in November 1999 is suing Uyesugi and three Xerox executives, alleging the three knew or should have known that Uyesugi showed violent tendencies as far back as 1993. The suit is the first filed in behalf of family members of the seven killed during the Uyesugi's workplace rampage. The suit was filed by Honolulu attorneys Michael Green, David Gierlach and Debra Kagawa on behalf of Merry Lynn Balatico, whose husband, Jason, was gunned down by Uyesugi who feared he was about to be fired.

July 6, 2001 - Mike Stagner - A 19-year-old woman died at a hospital, three days after Mike Stagner's rampage through a Colorado trailer park that left three others dead. Angelica Toscano died at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, a spokesman said. Prosecutor Mac Myers said police were investigating whether the shootings were racially motivated. Stagner's public defender declined to comment following his first court appearance.

July 5, 2001 - Witch Killers in Congo - Since June 15, over 200 suspected witches were hacked to death in villages in rebel-held northeastern Congo. "Villagers were saying that some people had bewitched others, and they started lynching them. By the time we discovered this, 60 people had already been killed by early last week. About 200 people lost their lives," Brig. Henry Tumukunde said.

July 5, 2001 - "Spider Killings" in Iran - Authorities suspect there is a serial killer active in Mashhad, one of Iran's holiest cities. Since July 2000, at least 12 "truck women" -- prostitutes who service mainly truckers and delivery men -- have been found strangled to death, their bodies dumped into local streets or canals. In all cases a head scarf has ben found knotted twice to the right side of the neck. The slayings have been dubbed "the spider killings" by a local newspaper because of the way the women were found wrapped in their chadors.

July 5, 2001 - Angel of Death in Switzerland - A male nurse at a home for the elderly in Lucerne, Switzerland, has admitted to killing nine women afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. The man, whose identity has been withheld, was questioned after 12 deaths were reported during a seven-month period in the home's dementia and geriatric units, police said. He admitted to causing at least nine deaths and said he had done "something good" for the women out of pity and compassion. Daniel Bussman, chief of Lucerne criminal police, said investigators were still trying to determine how the man had killed the women.

July 3, 2001 - Mike Stagner - A local drunk in Rifle, Colorado, seemingly reaching a boiling point over the growing Hispanic population in the area, went on a shooting rampage through a trailer park killing three people and leaving four others wounded. All victims were Hispanic. Prosecutors believe it was a racially motivated rampage and might treat it court as a hate crime.

July 2, 2001 - Andrea Yates - According to her brother, infanticidal housewife Andrea Yates thinks she is possessed by the devil. "I think the devil's in me," she told her brother Andrew Kennedy, "How long do you think the devil's been in me?" Kennedy said his family had been increasingly worried about his sister's mental health over the last six months, and one of her longtime friends was concerned enough that she kept a detailed diary of her severe emotional decline. Kennedy said his sister began receiving treatment for her most recent emotional problems this spring after she put a knife to her throat while visiting her mother's house and threatened to kill herself.
